The Radical Egalitarianism of the Langar
In medieval South Asia, caste purity dictated who could touch, speak to, or eat with whom. Guru Nanak shattered this social order by establishing Langar—a free community kitchen where kings and untouchables, rich and poor, sat on the ground as absolute equals to share a vegetarian meal. Five centuries later, the Golden Temple in Amritsar feeds over 100,000 people every single day, completely free of charge, funded entirely by voluntary donation and cooked through selfless volunteer service (Seva).
The Saint-Soldier (Sant-Sipahi) Ethic
Under the tenth master, Guru Gobind Singh, the Sikh community formed the Khalsa. When tyrannical empires sought to eradicate dissent through torture and forced conversions, the Sikhs refused to flee into pacifist isolation. The sword (Kirpan) was consecrated not as an instrument of conquest, but as a solemn moral restraint to be unsheathed only when all peaceful avenues of redress had completely failed.
